- Overview

The Internet of Sensing (IoS) is a technology that uses vision, audio, touch, and other technologies to give people digital sensory experiences. IoS enhances our senses beyond the boundaries of our bodies, giving us augmented vision, hearing, touch, and smell. 

IoS allows people to blend multisensory digital experiences with their local surroundings and interact with remote people, devices, and robots as if they were right beside them. 

In the context of IoS, devices include sensors and actuators that can capture and replicate sensory data. IoT sensors are electronic chipsets or modules that sense the ambient or system conditions and transmit that data to the Internet through a gateway. 

Some examples of sensors in IoT include:

  • Passive Infrared (PIR)
  • Ultrasonic
  • Pressure
  • Level
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Gas
  • Light (Optical)
  • Motion (PIR and Microwave)

 

- Immersive Physical Experience

The Internet of Sensing: Interacting with our senses of sight, sound, taste, smell and touch across the internet. 

In the Internet of Sensing (IoS), vision, audio, touch and other technologies enable humans to have digital sensory experiences similar to those in the physical world. 

The IoS enhances our senses beyond the boundaries of our bodies, enhancing our senses of sight, hearing, touch and smell. It enables us to blend multi-sensory digital experiences with the local environment and interact with remote people, devices and robots as if they were right next to us.

The sensory experience provided through the Internet is the essence of the IoS, which can be demonstrated through use cases such as five-sensory fusion reality, immersive communication, mechanical remote operation, full-sensory online shopping, and virtual reality sustainable vacations.

The IoS will transform our digital experiences into fully immersive experiences by making them multi-sensory. Imagine the immersive experience of being on the beach where you can feel the wind on your face, the sun on your back, the humidity of the ocean air on your skin, and experience the fresh smell of the sea breeze - Direct access to your body's living room. This multi-sensory experience provided through the future network will lead to the emergence of the IoS.

 

- The Internet of Sensing (IoS) Technology

Today we can play VR games with people around the world, get real-time augmented reality translations of foreign restaurant menus on our smartphones, meet with grandma via video chat, and keep an eye on traffic conditions digitally reproduced on the screen while driving. These are all examples of extended reality (XR) using audio and video, which allows us to experience our physical environment in different ways, even allowing us to be with people who are miles apart. 

Looking at technology developments over the next decade, we expect devices, sensors and actuators, as well as context-aware applications and network enablers, to make these experiences richer, involving all our senses, and ultimately merging the digital and physical world. We call this experience the “The Internet of Sensing.”

The IoS is a technology that uses the brain as an interface to exchange cognitive senses with users. It's made up of sensor networks with different types of sensed data. 

The IoS is expected to transform lives over the next decade. It looks like a tree, with sensors at the extremities that capture and feed data upwards.

- The Sensing Layer of the IoT Architecture

The sensing layer of the IoT architecture includes devices, sensors, and actuators. These devices collect data from their surroundings and control things at the edge. 

Some types of IoT sensors include: 

  • Motion sensors: Detect movement
  • Environmental sensors: Measure ambient conditions like temperature
  • Analog-to-digital converters: Convert continuous values into usable data streams
  • Gas sensing technology: Detects combustible

 

In IoT applications, sensors are connected to a network, such as WiFi, LPWAN, or cellular, to transmit collected data. The data is usually processed in a cloud-based service. 

The sensing layer of IoT architecture is the first layer of IoT architecture. It includes devices, sensors, and actuators that collect data from their surroundings and control things at the edge. 

The Internet of Things (IoT) enables access to information from anywhere at any time on any device. It also improves communication between connected electronic devices and enables the transfer of data packets over a connected network.  

The IoT is expected to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and transportation. For example, in smart cities, IoT sensors can help: 

  • Alleviate traffic
  • Conserve energy
  • Monitor and address environmental concerns
  • Improve sanitation
