- Overview

Additive manufacturing is the process of adding material to an object. 3D printing is a type of additive manufacturing.

Here are some types of additive manufacturing:

  • Selective laser melting: Uses a bed of powdered metal to grow metal parts.
  • Fused deposition modeling (FDM): A popular technology that's portable, low cost, and user-friendly.
  • Stereolithography: Uses a light source to cure liquid resin into hardened plastic.
  • Wire arc additive manufacturing: Uses an arc welding process to 3D print objects.
  • Selective laser sintering: Uses a laser on thermoplastic powders to make the particles stick together.

Additive manufacturing can shorten and secure the supply chain. It can also create new products with minimal waste and lower materials costs.
