Advancing Scientific Discovery through Collaboration across Research Domains

- Emerging Technologies

Emerging technologies are technologies whose development, practical application, or both remain largely unrealized. These technologies are usually new, but also include old technologies that are finding new applications. Emerging technologies are often considered to be able to change the status quo.

Emerging technologies are characterized by fundamental novelty (even if the origins are different, this is also true in applications), relatively rapid growth, coherence, significant impact, and uncertainty and ambiguity.

In other words, emerging technologies can be defined as technologies that have a certain degree of coherence and will last for a period of time, and have the potential to have a considerable impact on the socio-economic field, as can be seen from the composition of actors, institutions and the interaction patterns between them, as well as the related knowledge production processes.

However, their most prominent impact lies in the future, so there is still a certain degree of uncertainty and ambiguity in the emergence stage.

- EITA's Vision and Mission for Emerging Technology Research

“Emerging technologies” are those that lie between new scientific discoveries and fully commercialized technologies. It should involve a deep understanding of the technology, some kind of prototype, or better yet, some startups working to commercialize the technology.

But most importantly, the technology needs to be exciting, open up new opportunities in emerging technologies and beyond, and help solve major global problems – this is the focus of EITA’s vision and mission.

Emerging technologies are discoveries between a flash of inspiration in the lab and industrial applications.

- Emerging Technology Areas

Emerging technologies are those technical innovations which represent progressive developments within a field for competitive advantage.

"So many people today - and even professional scientists - seem to me like someone who has seen thousands of trees but has never seen a forest. A knowledge of the historic and philosophical background gives that kind of independence from prejudices of his generation from which most scientists are suffering. This independence created by philosophical insight is - in my opinion - the mark of distinction between a mere artisan or specialist and a real seeker after truth. -- A. Einstein, as mentioned in a 1944 letter to Robert A. Thorton"

- Find an Expert

The Internet is an answer factory. With new generative AI (GenAI) features in Search, Google’s search engine can now take on more of the search work. By improving Search with GenAI, you’ll be able to understand topics faster, discover new perspectives and insights, and get your job done more easily.

Universities are a rich source of expertise on a wide variety of subjects. You can contact your local university, or search university Web pages via Internet search engines (for example, Google's search engine).

The right keywords and navigation skills can unlock more data than any mind could hold. Looking to find a researcher to partner with?

To find researchers active in the area you are interested in, you can search by a variety of criteria, including:

  • Keywords
  • Area of application
  • Research subject
